Wear your Frame Style and Own Your Look!

I believe that the most important factor when selecting new eyewear is to honor your personality and project your true self.  I was in a client meeting last night and we both had the same face shape and hair colour.  You would think we could wear the same frames but that was not the case.  The big difference was our Frame Styles.  While I love to be the Daring Dramatic frame style, my client is the Subtle Sophisticate frame style.  This required me to change the material and the shape of frames I was selecting for her so to compliment her personality and wardrobe.  Your eyewear must be a current style so you don’t look dated, but you don’t necessarily have to wear the trends if they are not YOUR style.

Kathy Kruivitsky is a perfect example of THE NATURAL frame style and being authentic with her image.   Kathy is a Wealth Manager and it is crucial that her clients trust her and feel a connection.  THE NATURAL personality is friendly and approachable and able to build rapport and solid relationships with their clients.

Kathy’s amber and red plastic frames match the weight of her suit fabrics and also match the chunky accessories she loves to wear.  If we fit Kathy with a trendy Geek Chic frame, it would not be congruent with her business, personality or wardrobe style.  Her overall image is confident and trustworthy and hence her clients are completely open and honest with her so she can do her best to manage their money.

You will own your image if it is a true reflection of who you are and eyewear is one of the first accessories that others will see.  Kathy’s eyewear is a flattering colour, accentuates her eyes and is the final touch to her confident, approachable look.

Joy of Specs!

The season is getting busy as everyone pulls together their outfits for their holiday parties and I am thrilled to be helping clients top it all off with bright frames in red, burgundy and pink.  These colours are festive and accessorize perfectly with the little black dress.

When adding coloured frames to the wardrobe, I often get asked, “now what colour lipstick should I wear?”   I recommend taking your eyewear with you when shopping for lip colour so you can see the colour on your lips and then how it works with your complexion and frame colour.  The Daring Dramatic will get excited about a bright red lip colour with their bold eyewear whereas The Subtle Sophisticate may opt to tone down the lips when wearing a dark coloured frame.

Do your specs pass the kiss test?

Do your glasses pass the kiss test - Perceptions Eyewear

We can work romance in to any story and fitting eyewear is no exception.  Now, just to be clear, I was NOT romanced or kissed at any point during this meeting!!

I spend a significant amount of time during my consultations to be sure that eyewear is highlighting the contours of the face, accentuating the eyes and enhancing the cheekbones but had not heard of the “KISS TEST” until recently.

I met a long time client at her home and we were enjoying changing her look and trying all the new frame styles for this year.  We had narrowed our selection down to a few frames and then asked her husband if he would like to weigh in on the decision.

He was receptive and my client presented each frame to him using her finest runway model poses and lip puckering sexy appeal.   At the end of our quick fashion show, he commented, “there is only one way to be sure that we have picked the best frames.”  I was intrigued to see how he was going to make the ultimate decision.  He then announced the “KISS Test” and proceeded to explain to us how it works.

He had his wife try on each pair and then he puckered up, embraced his wife and gave her a big kiss.  If the new eyewear moved on her face during this endearing embrace then the frame was out of the running.

I think it was a good excuse to smooch with his wife but he did come up with a winner after “testing” each frame. The final choice was an artsy tortoise shell frame from Canadian designer Cendrine O. that stayed firmly in place after many kisses.

The romance is still alive for them and it is my understanding that the KISS test is now a daily occurrence at their house.

Do you look like Who you Are?

Elmer Olsen wears Daring Dramatic Eyewear.

Elmer Olsen with (one of his models) supermodel, Daria Werbowy.

I had the fun experience of visiting a Modeling Agency this week with my daughter. I would like you to think it was because I was “discovered” to be the next Supermodel…but sad for me that was not the case.

While waiting in the reception area, there was no doubt about where we were as 6-foot slim stunning young women surrounded us.

Once the room cleared, a tall man walked into the room dressed in trendy fashions, walking confidently and wearing a bold rectangular black and white asymmetrical marbled frame. He may not even be tall, but that is what I recall. ☺

He definitely had presence and a warm smile and I easily guessed that he was the OWNER of the modeling agency.

Once we started a conversation with this man, we knew he knew his business. He was direct at the same time he was friendly and open and engaged with us. The look he projected when he walked into the office and who he really is were exactly the same.

At no one time, did I look at just one thing he was wearing. Of course, I noticed his eyewear (it is my “thing”) but his whole image was congruent and authentic. I found it easy to build rapport and trust with him, as I was not trying to “figure” him out. His outward image was matched perfectly to his personality, as was his “Daring Dramatic” eyewear!

P.S. He has 10 pairs of eyeglasses so my guess is they always match his wardrobe.

Can you imagine having ONLY one pair?

Can you imagine having only one pair of glasses - Perceptions Eyewear

Have you ever waited to buy a new pair of shoes until your health plan would kick in $150.00?  Have you held off buying that fabulous new winter coat until February when your insurance dollars will reimburse you $100.00?  NOT!!

You know I am being facetious when I ask these questions but I wonder why the be-spectacled would wait 2 years to buy new eyewear or wait that long for the much-needed pair of prescription sunglasses.   Yes, they are considered a medical necessary; hence the small coverage under insurance plans, but just as important is how you look in your eyewear.

Can you imagine wearing your cross trainers with your little black dress?  Or hiking in your Jimmy Choos’?  It is difficult to have one pair of eyeglasses that functions or looks appropriate in all situations.

Over the last year, the big trend I noticed is that clients want to change up their glasses.  The comment, “If I have to wear them, I better look GOOD.”  They will wear one pair to the office and then a different pair to a dinner or cocktail party at night.  I have one client who owns an Ad Agency and her clients discuss what glasses she may wear when she shows up for the next meeting.  They are actually taking bets!!

For some clients, stepping out de-spectacled would feel like leaving home naked.  Their eyewear is that finishing accessory that tops off the sharp suit and the fabulous shoes.

Perhaps, one day we will all have a special closet just for our Specs!

Do Your Glasses Make You Look Old?

Do your glasses make you look old?

Have you ever met someone for the first time and while they were talking with you, they are peering over their reading glasses or they were taking the glasses off and on through the whole conversation?

I had a new client referred to me because he was doing just that.  This businessman was presenting to a group of Financial Planners.  At the end of his talk, a member of the audience approached the speaker and asked, “Do you know how many times you removed your glasses and then put them back on during your motivational talk?”  40 times!!!

Instead of listening to the speaker, this attendee was distracted by this movement and had not listened to the speakers’ message but rather counted the number of times he had removed his reading glasses.  He had no idea that this small habit could be detrimental to the success of his speech.

Working together, we decided that it was worth the investment in this man’s image and his business to move him into a progressive type lens.  Progressive lenses are a multifocal lens with the distance prescription at the top and reading at the bottom.  This allows the wearer to keep the glasses on ALL the time to see both distance and close up eliminating the on/off of reading glasses.

Peering over reading glasses can also make a person look OLD.  We remember our Granny peering over her reading glasses when talking with us or we remember a schoolteacher who may have been reprimanding us and we immediately think they are old.  Wearing progressives eliminates this perception, as there are no lines on the surface on the lens.  No one but your optician and hairdresser ever has to know you need your glasses to read!

Spec Accessories Can Be Magnetic

I was out for dinner last night at a delicious Greek restaurant on the Danforth.  While eating dinner, I looked over at another table and a woman caught my eye (no pun intended).  She was wearing a stunning pair of teal cat eye specs!  She commented on my glasses and we had a quick chat…she was celebrating her birthday!  I was also celebrating my birthday.  On the way out another group stopped me to compliment me on my specs.  From there we went off to the Danforth Music Hall to see one of my favorites, KT Tunstall perform her 1st show of her North American tour.  During intermission, I met another funky lady.  You guessed it!  She was wearing fabulous glasses.

As I reflected on the evening, I was grateful to my husband for organizing a fun date night and I also realized how many people I get to meet just because I wear really cool glasses.  It is like my glasses are a magnet for people.

I realized that if you are in a position where you want to be noticed:  a cocktail party, a networking event or even looking for a new mate, you may just need a “Spec Accessory” that reflects who you are and attracts new people to you. You also need to be ready for the attention!
